Good old Michael Moore is at it again. I think this time around he’s lost some weight and shaved. He’s starting to look respectable. This time he’s got a documentary on the healthcare crisis facing America. He dubs it simply “Sicko.”
Now truth be told, I haven’t seen “Sicko” yet. But I’ve seen the previews as well as interviews with Mr. Moore on the subject and so from what I have, I will continue.
I have seen “Fahrenheit 9/11.” You can get it “previously-viewed” at most Movie Galleries for about $5 now. I have to say, for what he does, Michael Moore is a good filmmaker. Everything is very flashy and well-edited. The facts aren’t always straight and he does a little re-arranging here and there to make sure his point of view is presented as superior, but nonetheless, the guy knows what he’s doing. By the way, if you want to see the other side (and frankly the true side) of the story, check out “FahrenHYPE 9/11,” or “Celsius 41.11.”
“Sicko” is being heralded as Moore’s most mature achievement in his career thus far. In the movie, he even takes 9/11 survivors to Cuba to get what he deems as healthcare that is superior to our own. And he’s probably right. If you’re as rich as Fidel Castro, you probably do receive excellent healthcare. But the average citizen of Cuba receiving that same healthcare? I highly doubt it.
So using “Fahrenheit 9/11″ as my standard for Michael Moore’s fact presentation, I’d say that “Sicko” could be at best 60% accurate, which I think is more than fair. And for the record, I am willing to actually watch “Sicko,” but I think I’ll wait until it’s $5 at Movie Gallery.
What gets me is that Michael Moore is a registered Democrat (or at least has been in the past) and a Socialist. He’s got an agenda. There’s no denying that. The media can make him out to be this great hero that sheds light on the injustices and failures of society, but he’s simply not.
Michael Moore wants socialized healthcare, which is not working terribly well in countries like England, France, Canada and elsewhere. Do you really want the government controlling your healthcare here in America as well?
If you get into literature by Kevin Trudeau, author of Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You to Know About, he exposes the different ways the government regulates the food industry and how they aren’t always looking out for your well-being. If the things he says are true, do you really want the government stepping in controlling what kind of healthcare you get as well?
You know, I once read where Sean Hannity said that liberals in America, including people like Michael Moore, claim to be pro-choice. But in reality, they are simply pro-abortion. You see when it comes to education, they’d rather you go to a public school than receive vouchers for private education. They don’t want you to be able to choose that. It’s the same with healthcare. They don’t want you to be able to choose the healthcare plan that’s right for you. They want a big Universal Healthcare plan that they control with no alternatives. And be sure to note that Democratic presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama support it.
And do you know how they would pay for this Universal Healthcare? That’s right, it’s coming out of your wallet in taxes. The government will tax you until you’ve paid the same amount that you would have if you had simply used private healthcare before. People, I’m taxed enough as it is! I don’t want the government trying to squeeze more money out of me. Universal Healthcare is a step towards Socialism, and Socialism is a step towards Communism.
But right now, we’re a capitalist country. We have the freedom to choose which products and services we buy. Companies must compete for our business and therefore are forced to attempt to make a superior product. Healthcare is the same way. We can choose the healthcare plan that’s right for us.
Are there gaps in the system? Sure. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But it’s not the government’s job to destroy competition and create a monopoly on healthcare. That’s contrary to the American way of life.
I say all this to point out that I am terrified of a Democrat in the White House in 2008. I love freedom too much. I love capitalism too much. I totally believe we need to improve the current healthcare system. But I don’t want the government taking control of what I’m currently able to choose.
In conclusion, I’m sure Michael Moore is going to bring up some valid points about the failures of healthcare in his movie. I just don’t subscribe to his idea of the solution.
