Scooter Libby & Bush vs. Clinton & Marc Rich

July 5, 2007

I noticed an article last night that piqued my interest. It was called “Dumping Bush & Cheney: Even Richard Nixon knew it was time to resign,” by Keith Olbermann. Of course, Keith Olbermann has taken issue with Bush in the past, whining about how there’s still not a 9/11 monument at Ground Zero, which I thought was ridiculous. Yes there needs to be a monument, but it takes a long time to clear out the enormous amount of debris, not to mention that they are preparing for a new building there. He’s blaming Bush for the slow construction. Well I guess Bush just needs to make an executive order to tell the workers down there to speed up their efforts, doesn’t he? I think that’s just silly.

I knew there would be a tremendous firestorm of criticism of our President when he commuted the sentence of Scooter Libby. Keep in mind, that’s a commutation of sentence, and not a pardon. That means that Libby still has to pay about $250,000 in fines and other penalties, he just doesn’t have to serve jail time. Perhaps that wasn’t the best thing the President could have done. However, it is certainly not the worst either. Although he hasn’t ruled out a full pardon for Libby, at this point, he has only commuted Libby’s sentence, which I think is fair.

After all, considering the facts of the case, many including former U.S. Attorney Rudy Giuliani have called into question as to whether or not what Libby did was even a crime. A full pardon may be a bit unreasonable, but a commutation?

Let’s say that Libby was guilty of everything he was accused and convicted of. What about Bill Clinton? He granted 140 pardons and 36 commutations, and many of them were quite controversial. Look at Marc Rich, who fled the country after being found guilty of tax evasion. Clinton pardoned him.

Now things really start to get hairy. It turns out that Libby was Rich’s attorney. And Bill Clinton considered Libby to be a “distinguished Republican lawyer,” because he supported Rich’s pardon. And Bill Clinton committed perjury. What a tangled web we have here.

So, Mr. Olbermann, you who call for an impeachment of our President, I have some “fair” solutions to suggest to you to settle this whole fiasco. You say our President lied to us and led us into war based on the same intelligence Congress had? Fine, then hold those who voted to authorize force against Sadaam including John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards accountable as well. They are equally as responsible for leading us into war.

As for the Libby Scandal, I say we throw Bush, Cheney, Libby, Bill Clinton, and Marc Rich all in jail because based on your standards, they are all equally guilty! They can share a cell together!

You have focused only on our President because you truly hate him, Mr. Olbermann. Just like the rest of the liberals in this country, you hate him. Granted, I do not always agree with our President, but as you said in your article, he is my President (and he’s your President) and I support him. Put a little fairness in your reporting, sir. Your readers might appreciate it.
