Ann Coulter and “Perfected Jews”

Unless you’ve been under a political rock for the past few years, you’d know that Ann Coulter is no stranger to controversy. Some of the things she says are completely outrageous, if not humorous from a conservative perspective. Personally I think she’s extremely intelligent and well-read, but certainly there are times when she can flirt with the line between hardline conservative and brashly extreme.

But yesterday, I came across an exchange between her and Donnie Deutsch, host of CNBC’s “The Big Idea.” In it, she expressed that America would be better off if we were all Christians. At this point, let me just say most religions think that if their beliefs dominated the world, the earth would be a better place. That’s not to say that as Christians, we would force our beliefs on everyone (although in times past, some so-called Christians felt like that was a good idea). And of course, Coulter was speaking in the context of an “ideal society,” not some twisted, forced reality.

However, the controversial part of the interview did not end there. Further on, Coulter says that, and this is a direct quote, “we (Christians) just want Jews to be perfected, as they say.” Now most news networks, even Fox News, are saying she said “Jews need to be perfected.” This is simply misleading. She said that Christians want Jews to be perfected. Donnie Deutsch was the one that quoted her as saying that Jews need to be perfected.

She went further to simply explain what Christianity is in the context of Judaism. She says that Christianity is a continuation of the Old Testament, which it is. She said that Christians believe that Christ died for our sins so that we could have the New Testament, which is also true. These statements are not controversial, they simply tell what Christianity is about.

Not one time in the course of the interview did Ann Coulter express the need to convert Jews to Christianity by force. Nor did she express anything anti-Semitic or hateful against Jews. She simply expressed the way Christians see Judaism. Christians, especially evangelicals, generally love Jews. Sure, ideally, we’d like to convert Jews to Christianity, but we would never force them to do so.

Obviously, Donnie Deutsch did not see it that way. He even compared Coulter to the head of Iran, who claims that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth. Not only did he take her comments out of context, it was as if he felt he was talking to Hitler!

Frankly, I don’t see Ann Coulter in this interview as being anti-Semitic as much as Deutsch being anti-Christian.

Now, here’s what I think is ironic. Last night, I read an article about Iran’s former President Hashemi Rafsanjani saying that Hitler persecuted Jews because they were a “pain in the neck.” Now I’d love to believe that Fox News was taking him out of context as well, but I somehow doubt that. He also said that Nazis actually “saved” Europe from the “evil of Zionism.” Yet for some reason, he’s playing second fiddle to Ann Coulter in the news today.

Given Ann Coulter’s previous controversial statements, I wasn’t surprised to see that she made headlines with something she said. But when I looked at the interview, it was clear to me that she was not trying to be controversial or provocative. She was only explaining her beliefs on Christianity.

Is it now “anti-Semitic” to tell people what you believe if you’re a Christian? I would hardly think so. I think it’s time for the news media to realize that this country is full of people that believe the same things that Ann Coulter believes in regards to Christianity. And these beliefs are not anti-Semitic, hateful, or even absurd.

And personally, I think the Donnie Deutschs of America should realize that.

“…we (Christians) just want Jews to be perfected….”

How morally blind do you have to be to defend a statement like that? Answer; You have to be an enemy of God and an enemy of the United States. You’re a coward and collaborator with the enemy who hides behind American free speech.

Yeah, Coulter can say what she wants, like this one:

“God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees. God said, ‘Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It’s yours.’”

Are you going to defend that one, too? I feel sorry for you people. You live in darkness. The sad thing is, you know it.

  2. Braden Says:

Morally blind, huh? I can hardly begin to understand what you meant by that. I’m an enemy of God and the USA because I am defending the statement that Christians “want Jews to be perfected?” A coward? Last I checked my position isn’t exactly the most popular… Collaborator with the enemy who hides behind American free speech? I don’t know if I’m hiding behind it as much as I’m expressing it….

You people? Who’s full of hatred now?

But just in case you are a rational American who believes in God, let me further explain perfection in the sense that Ann Coulter was talking about.

In Matthew 5:48, Christ says “you therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Hebrews 10:14 says that by Christ’s offering, he has “perfected for all time those who are being sanctificed.”

Hebrews 12:2 speaks of Christ as the “perfecter of our faith.”

James 1:4 says “And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

1st John 4:18 says that “whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”

So yes, Ann Coulter wants Jews to be “perfected.” So do I. I’m a Christian that believes that Christ died for the entire world. Is that so anti-Semitic? Is that morally blind?

Now, I’m not here to defend that other statement of hers you quoted. That’s not what this discussion is about. So you may feel sorry for me and people like me. That’s fine. You say I live in darkness, but I’m here to tell you that I’m doing my best to walk in the light as He is in the light.

I’m not perfect, only Christ can make me perfect. And He can do the same for you too.

Good post, Braden, but Ann Coulter still scares me.

    Hmm…interesting.
You need to read some history.
You have no right to tell any Jew how they have a right to feel. Your ignorance is exceeded only by your arrogance. It is unfortunately typical of many types of fundamentalists.
If you’re looking for salvation, you might want to distance yourself from Coulter, before the lightning bolt strikes her.

I know this comes as news to you, but there are hundreds of religions on this Earth, and not all of them can be right. Yours is no more likely to be right than anyone else’s. Most non-Christians find it insulting, and yes, even threatening, in the right circumstances, to be prostelitized.

For many if not most Jews, attempts at conversion have often (usually) led to violence. I am sure from your writings that violence is not your intent, but any time that you identify someone as an inferior (in belief, too) other, you turn them into an Untermensch.

I’m not going to violate Godwin’s Law, so I’ll leave it at that.

  6. PalMD Says:

Young man, I think you need to reexamine your role as a “soldier of faith”. It is very relevant that people don’t want your Christian love and conversion. It is relevant because many people’s identity is explicitly NOT Christian, and we’re happy with that. To attack (even without violence) someone’s very identity is to attack the person, the “soul” if you will.
Jews almost universally see you and your ideas as an existential threat, and with good reason.
Practice your faith, let it bring you joy and peace. But realize that billions of your fellow humans don’t care about your faith, never will, and calling them “wrong” will only hurt your faith and their safety.

  7. Braden Says:

Truthfreedom, you have no right to tell me what I should feel either. Your comment degraded and insulted my religion far more than I could have degraded Judaism. Christ teaches us that we should spread His words to the world, whether we are rejected or not. This does not in any way imply force. In fact, Christ also teaches that if we are met by opposition or rejection, then we should shake the dust from our sandals and move on. I have read quite a bit of history, and in it I see that millions have people have been converted to Christianity on their own volition. Any so-called Christian who would “prostelitize” anyone by force is not following the commandments of Christ. Keep in mind that Christ, Peter the apostle, and Paul the apostle were Jews and none of them or any of their Jewish followers were converted by force. In fact, true conversion has nothing to do with violence whatsoever. So attempting to convert Jews by humble and open-minded means is not violent at all. It has happened for thousands of years WITHOUT violence and WITHOUT force.

PalMD, I am do not necessarily call myself a “soldier of faith,” but I suppose I could. I understand that many in this world do not accept Christ and His teachings. That is fine. No one’s identity has been attacked or even threatened in this discussion whatsoever. To see Ann Coulter’s interview or my blog as an attack or threat is simply a case of delusional paranoia devoid of any rational fear. I have not called Jews wrong, and Ann Coulter did not either. If you read the transcript of the interview, you would know that. In fact, she said “we think Jews go to Heaven.”

Folks, Ann Coulter was asked a hypothetical question by Donnie Deutsch and she answered it. She never implied that Christians should force their religion on anyone. There was no attack or threat whatsoever on Jewish people.

I understand that in times past, many so-called Christians have forced a false brand of Christianity on people. But this has nothing to do with the discussion at hand. And everyone would do well to realize that.

  9. phillip moss Says:

Sir, with all due respect, Miss Coulter did call Jews wrong. Otherwise they wouldn’t need to be “perfected.” I am amazed that so many bloggers have rushed to explain to the rest of us what she REALLY meant. She never needed anyone’s help before in defending herself. I am unable to defend her theology because I have no idea what she believes in.

Her statements in the past on a variety of subjects are very inflammatory and divisive. In the book of Micah, God declares what he requires of man- “Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly before thy GOD.” Likewise, in the New Testament Jesus commands us to love GOD and our neighbor without qualification. Perhaps Miss Coulter walks that walk in her personal life and this public persona is just her meal ticket. I pray so.

  10. Braden Says:

Phillip, Ann Coulter did not call Jews wrong any more than she called Christians wrong. Absolutely nowhere in the interview does she say that Jews are wrong (verbatim or otherwise) nor did she say that they were going to Hell.

She also spoke of “perfected Christians,” in the interview, meaning that Christians would also be wrong, according to your logic. It’s not a matter of right or wrong, sir. It’s a matter of perfection and non-perfection. No human (Jew, Christian, or otherwise) is perfect. Christians believe that in order to be perfected, we must come into contact with the sacrifice of Christ.

But nowhere did she actually say Jews were wrong or that they were going to Hell, she merely described Christianity as opposed to Judaism. She even said “we believe Jews go to Heaven.”

I’m not necessarily here to defend Coulter as a person or even as a Christian, per se. I’m here to point out that her statements in this specific interview were correct according to the Christian persepective. I do believe that she has been misquoted, defamed, and misinterpreted and this one interview has been blown out of proportion by people who already disdain her anyway.

If Ann Coulter is going to be attacked concerning something she has said or written, that’s fine. Americans have a right to do so. But this interview was not anti-Semitic as can be seen clearly from the transcript.

  11. subversivechurch Says:

I would say the Jews have a significant head start on being perfect, (even according to Christian theology) since Jesus was a Jew, and never converted to anything else to “perfect” himself.

  12. Scott Shifferd Jr. Says:

That’s about the most foolish thing that I’ve ever heard. Jesus *was* a Jew, but now He *is* the head and founder of the New Covenant, Christianity, the Church. Jesus is not a religious Jew now. He condemns the practice of Judaism as an obsolete law (Heb. 8, Gal. 3-5, and so on and so on). He would be better described as a “Christian” if He were not the Christ.

Christ’s perfection of the Law of Moses is essential to the fulfillment of the Law of Moses and the establishment of the better Law and Covenant of Christ thus putting away the Law of Moses from being binding. Jews today follow their own righteousness and they are condemned (Rom. 10:1-4, Gal.).

It is hard to believe that some people are so ignorant, but this is the same person who questioned Christ for condemning homosexuality. He and us all will be judged by Christ’s words (John 12:47-48). May God bless him with the mind and heart to repent.

  13. Mourtle Says:

Actually, Scott, Jesus is a Muslim! Jesus H. Christ? What do you think the H stands for? Hussein! Jesus Hussein Christ. Think about it. Jesus CAN NOT be a Christian, because if he were that would mean he would worship/venerate himself, and that would be extremely vain. Vanity is a sin. But nobody was more humble than Jesus Christ. Nor can he be Jewish because if Jesus was Jewish, that would falsify Christianity. (Jews do not believe in Jesus Christ… well many of them believed that he lived, that he was an actual person, but nothing else.) For obvious reasons, Jesus was not an atheist, as he is the Son of God and it is kind of hard to be atheist when you are God’s son. He would HAVE to belong to an Abrahamic religion because he accepts the Abrahamic God and no other. But he could not be Jew or a Christian for the reason I mentioned above. Out of process of elimination, that leaves Islam. Or perhaps he was a Jehovah’s Witness (not sure if JC could be a member without doing so in a state of hubris).

In all likelihood, Jesus was a Muslim (according to Islamic theology one need not be a “Mohammedan” to accept Islam, at least prior to the writing of the Koran). After all, Jesus (Isha) and many of the Hebrew prophets were Muslims according to the Islamic tradition. Personally, I suspect that Jesus may also have been a Buddhist, but that is unlikely. (Buddhism is not mutually exclusive with most religions, as Buddhism does not come with a particular deity or deities, but a Christian can not be a Buddhist as far as I know, some NT quote to that effect. I’m not sure if a Muslim can also be a Buddhist.)

    Facts about Jesus:
    1. Jesus Christ worshiped Allah. (Allah merely means “the God” in Arabic, derived from the Semitic root for god or deity.) Remember that Allah, the “God of Muhammad,” and Jehovah/Yahweh the “God of Abraham” and of Moses are the same entity. You can argue that Judaism or Christianity or Islam is the “wrong way to worship” God, but to suggest that Muslims worship a different deity altogether means that Jews and Christians worship a different gods. One could then argue that Catholics, Protestants, and Mormons worship different Gods. Or that Pentecostals, Anglicans, Free Will Baptists, and Evangelical Lutherans worship different deities…

    2. Jesus was a prophet of Allah (Jehovah/Yahweh). Remember that “Islam” predates Muhammad. The term “Islam” is from the Arabic word for “submission.” One who submits to Allah. As such, whether or not Muhammad got it all right in the Koran, Jesus was Muslim by definition, and as much an Islamic prophet as a Christian one.

    3. Jesus was a member of the “Arab race.” Sort of… In all likelihood, Jesus belonged to one of the Semitic tribes related to the Arabs of today. He spoke Aramaic, a Semitic language. Hebrews were related to the ancestors of today’s Arabs (Bedouins, Palmyrans, Philistines, Yemenites, Ishmaelites, etc.). So having an Arabic middle name (Hussein) is not too far fetched. (Yeh’shua Hussein bn Youssef?)

    4. European Christian artwork depicts Jesus as a “white” man, often with blue, green, grey, or hazel eyes, and light skin and light brown hair. He tends to look German, French, British, or Celtic; or at most Greek or Italian, often shown in Greco-Roman attire. In fact, the real Jesus probably was a brown man with course dark hair and possibly “Armenoid” features. Living in the desert of Palestine, he would likely wear clothing suited for that setting, perhaps with a turban-like head cover. (A felt fez-type hat might be anachronistic, because I am pretty sure it was introduced into the Middle East by the Turks in Medieval times.) Modern American Christians would be surprised upon meeting Jesus, being greeted by an Arab-looking gentleman when they would expect a white European in a toga.

So consider, Mr. Shifferd, that Jesus was neither a Jew OR a Christian. He was a MUSLIM!

Repent or suffer in Hell? TRANSLATION: Believe what I SAY or you will be the recipent of violence. You are wrong because I say so…

How very Christian of you Mr. Shifferd! I do not think that Jesus would look too kindly on threats or extortion. Scott, I actually just recieved a message from God. He said:

“Dear Mourtle. Please let Scott Shifferd Jr. know that I sent Jerry Falwell to Hell where he is to be Satan’s b**** for a hundred years. Tell Scott Shifferd Jr. that he will likewise visit the lowest circle of Hell, reserved for those self-righteous believers who do evil in MY NAME. Worse than ordinary sinners, a level where even Stalin may not gain entry. Satan shall anally violate Mr. Shifferd for centuries if he does not learn humility. However, if Scott ceases being so judgemental and arrogant, I may yet let him in my Kingdom. It is not enough that one calls himself a Christian. He must actually follow the example of my son. JC was not a zealot, a bigot, or a vain and judgemental person. He repudiated hypocrisy, saying ‘He with no sin cast the first stone.’”

Well, please take those words to heart unless you want to be Lucifer’s butt-boy for millenia.

…[NOTE: I was assuming you are serious. It is possible that you were being sarcastic, that your entire WordPress profile is satirical and that your entire blog is an act of parody to make Christians look like judgemental a-holes.]

  16. Scott Shifferd Jr. Says:

    Mourtle,

“No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” – Jesus

The threat is from yourself. Your sin condemns you.

You are propagating a lie. You invent your own righteousness (Rom. 10:1-3). Is that not self-righteous? You are a false teacher. Jesus addressed blind men like you as sons of Satan, vipers, actors, whitewashed tombs, sons of murderers, and bound for hell, because of the hate and malice that you have for God and Christ. All that teach as you fit the description, “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?” Jesus’ words teach clearly that you are more than condemned even anathema(Gal. 1:8-9), so was I until I repented.

Your malice shows exactly your character.

  17. Mourtle Says:

    Scott,

Accusing people who disagree with your rather narrow religious views as having “hate and malice” for “God and Christ” does not win whatever argument, or prove whatever point you are trying to make. I am malicious? Am I supposed to be offended because some idiot fundy thinks I am malicious?

Well, quite frankly, I may be right, you may be right, we both may be wrong, who knows?! I’m sorry but I just can’t help offending religious nuts. It is amusing precisely because you take yourselves way too seriously! Quite frankly I am not worried about what your personal version of God has planned. If faced with Hell or an eternity with judgmental, pompous, sanctimonious zealots like yourself, I think I prefer the former. How bad can Hell be when the alternative is eternity with arrogant, self-righteous, uptight souls like yourself? I think I’d rather get the fire and brimstone.

I STILL do not know if you are really a fundy idiot, or a parody. If you really are the latter, then you play the part very well, too well… it is scary how much time and effort you invest. If you are a fundy moron, well, you have my pity. One thing is certain, you are UNABLE TO TAKE A JOKE as you are utterly devoid of humor, unless that is just you in character.
